About me

I sort out servers and software for small businesses and agencies across the UK. One person, who takes ownership and explains everything in plain English.
How I got here
It started with an Amstrad CPC 6128, then an Amiga 600. I've been hooked on computers ever since.
My first proper job was as a sysadmin, keeping other people's systems running. That was over 25 years ago, and I've been running servers and infrastructure for businesses ever since, including large publishing businesses.
Why open source
I've seen too many businesses trapped. Locked into software they can't leave, paying more every year per person, with their own data held hostage by a supplier.
Open source fixes that. The tools are proven (Linux and open-source software run most of the internet), there are no per-user licence fees, and your data stays yours. If you ever want to move on, from a tool or from me, you can.
How I work
Calm and straight-talking. I tell you what's actually going on, what matters and what doesn't, without drama or jargon. Then you decide.
- One person. You deal with me from start to finish. No call centre, no being passed around.
- Plain English. If I use a technical word, I explain it. Reports are written for business owners, not engineers.
- Small, visible steps. I'm Agile Foundation certified, so work happens in steps you can see, with no big reveal at the end.
- Honest about cost. I quote before I start, and if something isn't worth doing, I'll say so.
Away from the keyboard
I play guitar in three indie and alternative bands, including Sneaker and Artificial Monkeys. I have a soft spot for offset guitars (a Jazzmaster, if you're asking), a ThinkPad habit I've stopped apologising for, and a growing pile of vinyl.
The business
I trade as Rob Sherwood Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (number 17498472). Based in Kent, working UK-wide.
Let's talk about your systems
Most people start with a server health check: a fixed-price, plain-English look at where you stand.
